Official Release of the Accident of Carlos Cotoruelo
On the 23rd of August, at around 17:15 hours, Mr. Carlos Cotoruelo passed away in a sporting accident in the specialty of paramotor. The sportsman, member of the Spanish National Selection of paramotor was participating in the EMC Paramotor that is being held in Chozas de Abajo, from the 19th to the 26th of August of 2006.
The accident occurred during a free flight, out of the competition, when he was flying back to the head quarters of the competition after having finalized without any problems the competition task that was carried out on the 23rd.
The accident was not eye witnessed by neither pilots nor technicians with aeronautical experience. It happened in the municipality of Villaroañe in the proximity of a gravel zone surrounded by a grove and close to the river.
The person that alerted about the accident manifested that a sort of a “whirlwind” caused the canopy to fold, making the paramotor plunge to the ground, therefore the pilot not having enough time to make an emergency landing.
Given the absence of the eyewitnesses with capacity to evaluate technically the events, and on the other hand given the high experience of the pilot, what probably happened was an unexpected whirl in the gravel area, that made the canopy of the paramotor collapsed, without giving the pilot enough time to stabilize the canopy.
Even though the emergency “UVI movil” appeared quickly at the site, there was nothing that they could do in order to save the pilot’s life.
At around 22:00 hours, after the Spanish team had their meeting and another meeting with the team leaders of the teams participating in the European Paramotor Championship, it was jointly decided to go on with the competition understanding that the best tribute that could be done to Carlos Cotoruelo would be: to go on flying, just how he liked it.
At 23:15 hours all the pilots and members of the organization held a very moving act by hauling half-way down the official flags as a tribute to Carlos..

Comunicado Oficial del Accidente de D. Carlos Cotoruelo
El día 23 de agosto, sobre las 17:15 horas, falleció en un accidente el deportista de la especialidad de paramotor D. Carlos Cotoruelo. El citado deportista, miembro de la selección nacional española de paramotor estaba participando en el Campeonato de Europa de Paramotor que se celebra en Chozas de Abajo, del 19 al 26 de agosto de 2006.
El accidente se produjo en un vuelo libre, fuera de competición, cuando estaba regresando en vuelo hacia la sede de la competición tras haber finalizado sin ninguna incidencia la prueba de competición que se había desarrollado el día 23.
Dicho accidente se produjo en el término municipal de Villaroañe, en las cercanías de una gravera delimitada por zonas de arboleda y próxima al río, sin que ningún piloto o personal técnico con experiencia aeronáutica fuese testigo de lo ocurrido.
La persona que alertó sobre el accidente manifestó que se produjo en la zona “una especie de remolino” que provocó la plegada de la vela del paramotor ocasionando su precipitación al suelo sin que el piloto consiguiese realizar un aterrizaje de emergencia.
Ante la ausencia de testigos presenciales con capacidad de evaluar técnicamente lo ocurrido, y por otro lado dada la alta experiencia del piloto, probablemente se produjese un rotor inesperado en la zona de la gravera que colapso la vela del paramotor sin que el piloto consiguiese estabilizar la vela.
A pesar de la rápida llegada de una UVI móvil al lugar del accidente, no pudieron hacer nada por salvar la vida del piloto.
Sobre las 22 horas, después de reunirse el equipo español, se realizó una reunión con todos los jefes de equipos participantes en el Campeonato de Europa de paramotor, y conjuntamente se decidió seguir adelante con la competición entendiendo que es el mejor homenaje que se puede hacer a Carlos Cotoruelo: seguir volando como a él le gustaba.
A las 23:15 horas con todos los pilotos y miembros de la organización se realizó un emotivo acto arriando las banderas oficiales a media asta en homenaje a Carlos.
